The Drachtel belongs to the dragon family but is completely harmless and poses no danger to humans.
It grows to a maximum of 20 cm, making it more of a pixie among dragons.
As the Drachtel ages, its skin petrifies and becomes increasingly covered with moss. Very old specimens are indistinguishable from mossy stones.
This, of course, makes it perfectly adapted to its habitat in the Palatinate Forest. When enemies approach, it rolls itself into a mossy stone ball.
The Drachtel feeds mainly on nuts. Its pointed jaw bones are perfectly suited for cracking them.
Like all dragons, it can breathe fire. The flames mainly emerge from its nostrils, which it uses to roast chestnuts – its absolute favorite food.
Excess smoke escapes from its fireproof ears. This, by the way, is the origin of the phrase „my head is smoking“ (to be overwhelmed).
